Cycle tour along memories of the Second World War - VVV Ameland

Cycling tour along memories from World War II

During World War II, the Germans built several bunker emplacements on Ameland.

Some of these are still clearly visible in the landscape, others are hidden under the sand and vegetation. This special cycle tour will take you past tangible and less visible traces of the war, leaving you to reflect on the island's past along the way.

Bunker museum

The bike tour starts at the Bunkermuseum Ameland in Hollum. Here you get an immediate first impression of the network of bunkers constructed during the war years. The route is about 25 kilometres long and takes you past various locations that remind you of the occupation years: from simple sand walls and wooden fortifications to concrete bunkers that have stood the test of time.

On your own

Cycle past 17 locations connected to the wartime years and discover the story of Ameland during the Second World War. The tour is entirely self-guided. A route leaflet, available free of charge from VVV Ameland and the Ameland Museums (while stocks last), shows you the way and provides extra information at each site.

This way, you can explore the history of a turbulent era at your own pace, along silent witnesses that remain visible on the island to this day.
