Green Beach
The beach near Ballum used to be the widest beach of Ameland. However, as a result of tidal changes, a sand hook developed in the North Sea above Ballum in the late nineties. Within this sand hook, the slow movement of water deposited a thin layer of silt and soon salicorn began to grow here. The area grew more and more dense, small dunes formed and vegetation became more and more diverse.
Particularly the difference in altitude and moisture in the area result in such a richly varied vegetation. The Green Beach is a special nature area, which continues to develop itself.
Bathing beach
Despite the fact that the area is no longer a natural bathing beach, each spring numerous volunteers create a bathing beach near Ballum.
