Ballumer Blinkert

The Ballumer Blinkert is an impressive dune on the narrowest part of Ameland, near the village of Ballum. 

From the top, you will enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding dunes, the forest area and the Wadden Sea. On a clear day, you can even see the ferry sailing in the distance.

Ever higher

Historically, the Ballumer Blinkert was once higher. However, during World War II, the dune was lowered about five metres because of the construction of bunkers.

Hikers and cyclists

For walkers and cyclists alike, Ballumer Blinkert is easily accessible. Several paths wind through the dunes and surrounding woodland, making it a popular spot for islanders and visitors alike.

Flora and fauna

The surroundings of the Ballumer Blinkert are home to a rich variety of flora and fauna. In the nearby dunes and wet dune valleys you will find a diversity of plant species characteristic of the Wadden area. Bird lovers can spot various bird species in this area, such as the hen harrier, eider duck, curlew and avocet.

Another interesting location for bird lovers is the Ballumerbocht. This viewpoint offers a view of the mudflats, where you can observe oystercatchers, plovers, curlews, sandpipers and terns at low tide.

The Ballumer Blinkert can be reached on foot as well as by bicycle.

By car you can drive up to the car park at Strandpaviljoen Ballum or at the Ballumerbos.
From here it is about another 2 to 2.5 km walk to the Ballumer Blinkert.

The Ballumer Blinkert is part of several beautiful cycling routes across Ameland. During a trip across the island, you can combine this striking dune peak with other special places, such as the picturesque Ballum and the extensive nature area around Hollum. The routes lead you over shell paths and through wooded areas, with plenty of opportunities to stop along the way and enjoy the view.
