Ameland, with its beautiful nature, clean beaches and hospitality. No wonder this island wins great prizes and awards every year!
As VVV Ameland, we naturally think our island is the best, the nicest, the most beautiful! So it's extra nice that this is also recognised by renowned bodies!
Ameland's beach has received the following awards for years:
- Blue Flag
- Quality Coast Award
- Cleanest Beach
We also scored no less than 8.3 in the ANWB coastal perception survey!
Blue Flag
The Blue Flag is the international award given to beaches and marinas that are safe, sustainable and clean. In practice, this means marinas and beaches must meet a number of important criteria such as clean (swimming) water, good sanitary facilities and a high level of safety.
Awarded annually
The Blue Flag is awarded annually in May to beaches and marinas. Every year, inspections check whether beaches and marinas still meet the requirements.
Quality Coast
Quality Coast is a certification programme of the Green Destinations Foundation and was developed with the support of the European Union. The aim of the programme is to make coastal municipalities more sustainable and environmentally friendly and to reward efforts by municipalities and businesses. Quality Coast destinations are reassessed every two years on the aforementioned themes using 100 criteria and as many performance indicators. These criteria and indicators match and comply with the global standard for sustainable destinations of the UN body ‘Global Sustainable Tourism Council’.
Cleanest beach of the Netherlands!
Ameland comes a close second in the Cleanest Beach of the Netherlands election!
On Thursday 25 July 2024, the awards for the Best Pavilion of the Netherlands and the Cleanest Beaches were presented.
The award for the cleanest beach went to the municipality of Westland. Hollum beach on Ameland was narrowly second with only one tenth difference. With a score of no less than 9.83, Strand Hollum thus became Friesland's cleanest beach!
ANWB coastal experience survey
Dutch people are very satisfied with the North Sea coast. This is according to a representative survey by the ANWB among more than 2,000 Dutch people, who visited the coast last year.
The coastal areas of Zeeland, South Holland and North Holland received a rating of 7.9, 7.6 and 7.7 respectively. The Wadden Islands are rated best with an 8.3.
