very spring, the ditches between Ballum and Hollum turn bright yellow with daffodils – better known on Ameland as “yellow bells.” These flowers have been blooming here for over forty years. It all started in the 1980s with farmer Jan Bakker, who planted daffodil bulbs along Pietje Miedeweg and Ridderweg. Knowing he had only a short time left to live, he wanted to leave a lasting memory. Since then, the yellow bells have spread further across the island.
You can’t miss them while cycling, walking, or driving on Ameland. For many, they are the ultimate sign that spring has arrived. In addition to daffodils, you’ll also find plenty of snowdrops and crocuses on the island.
